Thank you for your interest in our training services, the following will give you more detailed information regarding the training route.
Before we can begin your training you must hold a full car driving licence. Next
Complete a D2 form applying for provisional entitlement for PCV vehicles either Category D (large bus) or Category D1 (up to 16 seats.) Category D forms can be obtained from most main post offices, or can be ordered directly from the DVLA at www.dvla.gov.uk. Alternatively we can provide these forms on request.
Undergo a medical examination by a qualified practitioner to ensure health and eyesight requirements are met. This will be evidenced by the GP signing the D4 form. Please note the medical does not have to be undertaken by your own GP, we can arrange a competitively priced medical examination by a qualified GP at around £60.00.
Forward completed D2 and D4 Forms together with existing licence and the correct fee to DVLA Swansea and wait for the licence to be returned with PCV provisional entitlement. Turnaround time is usually between 10 – 14 days.
What happens next?
Before candidates can take their practical test to qualify as a PCV Driver (Category D1) they need to pass various theory tests, involving, multiple choice and hazard perception.
The DSA have published a book/ CD rom that is an excellent guide for those preparing to take their PCV theory test, entitled “ The official DSA Theory test for drivers of large vehicles” (2008/09 edition) The CD rom allows trainees to take mock tests on computer, simulating the actual exam. For those candidates who have already passed their theory exam we can move straight into the practical training. For those who may need a little extra help to pass we can provide classroom training to ensure that candidates are clear on what is expected of them and have sufficient knowledge to gain a pass.
On the Road
We will need to take personal details and a copy of your licence for our records to ensure compliance with our insurance terms. You will be asked to undergo a driving assessment (approx.1 Hour) to assess your driving ability. A qualified trainer will firstly introduce you to your training vehicle ( A fully licenced, DSA approved vehicle) and familiarise you with the controls. The trainer will then travel a short distance in the vehicle with you to demonstrate key skills. When you are ready you get a chance to drive!
Practice, Practice, Practice!
You will be given plenty of opportunity to practice your driving skills in preparation for the practical test. We can be flexible in our training programmes, depending on trainee needs; however a typical day will begin at around 9.00 am and will end at 4.00 pm structured breaks will be built in to the day to allow for review of driving skills, problem areas.
The Day of the Test
Tests will be booked by us at either Pontypool, Neath, or LLantrisant test station. You will need to ensure you present us with your theory test pass date, certificate number and valid driving licence number. You will have covered the relevant test route during your practical training and will be fully aware of what the test involves. You may or may not wish to drive on the journey to the test centre; that is up to you! Either way you will be accompanied by your instructor on the day of the test.
